History:

The aptly named Queen Hel, had been peacefully ruling Helheim, The Underworld, for countless centuries when a great disturbance forced her hand. The rivers of Helheim had been poisoned with a powerful miasma that was threatening the whole of her land. Thinking it was a plot orchestrated by the humans of Midgard, she did something unthinkable. She left Helheim to enact a violent rebuttal against the humans of Midgard. Though many opposed her they weren't much of a match for the Goddess of the dead, that was until one of Odin's Valkyries, Skuld, and a human who had been chosen to wield a powerful blade came to the aide of the innocents. Even then the situation was not immediately solved as Hel's fury was not easily sated, and she even went as far to place a would be fatal curse on Skuld. The newly appointed rune wielder was able to heal the curse, then the two, Valkyrie and human, descended to the underworld to face Hel again on her home turf.

That's where they found Hel in a deteriorating state herself. In order to save her people she purified the water by using her own powers, however she'd received a high dose of the poison and was not likely to recover. Once again the rune knife was employed to rescue her. Confused by why a human would save their own enemy, Hel was finally willing to hear the other side of the story, Still leery of humans in general, she was still willing by this point to seek out what the real source of the problem was. Following the path of the river it was soon discovered that a great beast was the the one releasing the toxins. As an additional peculiarity this beast was trapped there by an invisible barrier, indicating that someone else was behind this. Someone wanted a war to break out between Helheim and Midgard.

The intrepid trio then decided to go to Asgard to see if more information could be found there and to relay the seriousness of the situation they just experienced. Driven by a strong desire to see this perpetrator brought to justice and punished, Hel continued to travel with Skuld and the chosen one. To add more fuel to the proverbial fire, he group finds Asgard has been infiltrated by demons. When they defeat the demons they are finally able to confer with Odin, who informs them that Ragnarok, the end of the world, is swiftly approaching and that the dispute between Helheim and Midgard is only the beginning. He advises them to undergo more training so they they may be ready to prevent the calamity. It's from that point that Hel's journey truly begins.

It also should be noted that before taking up her position in Helheim, Hel did attend Odin Academy alongside Loki, and Thor.

Personality:

Skeptical: Hel isn't quick to trust others, she's essentially a firm believer in actions speak louder than words. This is evidenced from her interactions in the very beginning of the story and throughout. When she first joined the expedition to stop Ragnarok and to find who had tried to cause a war between Midgard and Helheim it was almost reluctantly so, since she still didn't entirely trust her companions despite having been aided by them already. It wasn't until that were several weeks into their journey that she seemed to reach an understanding about them, the wielder of the rune knife especially. Perhaps her aversion to doling out her trust freely comes from her experiences as Queen of the Underworld, or because she attended the same academy as Loki, the trickster God. People and creatures are always trying to find a way to talk themselves out of being committed to their eternal rest. Plus with her great abilities, there's always someone keen on trying to manipulate her powers into carrying out their designs including whomever is trying to initiate the destruction of the world. While her companions are generally more trusting in nature she has to be the one to remind them that not everyone's intentions are fueled by good will.

Compassionate: Despite what a force she can be in a battle, Hel actually possesses an aversion to discord, combat, and bloodshed. In one scene, she even turns down a raspberry dessert because the syrup reminds her too much of blood. The awkward persona she projects is a cold, and uncaring one but underneath it all she truly cares about others and is usually willing to lend a helping hand though she might try to mask her reasons in doing so. When the water in Helheim is poisoned, she purifies it at her own expense. Her subjects are notably grateful for her potentially fatal sacrifice, but she plays it off by saying that she didn't do this specifically for them but because it was her duty as their queen. Whenever anyone tries to point out her moments of kindness, Hel will vehemently deny it, possibly insulting the person who made the claim in the first place or just get flustered in general. She follows her own sense of what is right and wrong but seemingly prefers if it's not acknowledged since she doesn't know how to handle it. One of the reasons she fights to defend her kingdom is because she truly believes that her subjects have already experienced a lot of misfortune and loss before their deaths and should be able to live out their afterlives peacefully without further strain or stress. Later in the story, when she realizes that Odin himself had been denying Ymir from crossing over into the afterlife she was infuriated and disappointed, since it was everyone's right to pass on.

Sarcastic: Hel possesses a keen wit but it is often applied towards being snarky or condescending when she sees fit. She has little patience for what she perceives as naivete or stupidity and she will definitely comment about it, although sometimes her words fly right over her targets head, which is probably for the best. That's not to say that every time she makes a smart remark that it's intent is to make someone else feel poorly. Sometimes it's just a reflex as it's her brand of humor. An example of this is when the party attends a new years festival in which Skuld gets a little tipsy, and one of the other party goers tries to take advantage of it. Hel, noticing the issue swiftly intervenes telling the party goer that her designs won't be happening, but Skuld is still clueless to the danger and says something to the effect of “Oh is that some kind of party game?” to which Hel simple replies, “Sure we'll go with that”. In that case it was just better not to have to explain it.

Prissy: Since she holds the position of Queen of Helheim, Hel possess a sense of pride and doesn't like to engage in activities she sees as below her. For instance, when she first begins her travels she is appalled when her companions suggest sleeping outside and eating from what they can gather from the local wildlife and foliage. She quite emphatically protests against it reminding her who she is and how ridiculous it is that they expect her to sleep among dirt and bugs or eat weeds. As such it can be difficult to convince her to engage in some recreational activities as well, such as singing and dancing. She does not however care if other people engage in those things, unless we're talking about Skuld and he massive appetite for food. Hel will often comment about that and usually in the negative. The longer she travels the less she seems to complain about the accommodations, more or less accepting the conditions but not being thrilled with them. Along these lines she also will disagree with anyone who attacks her character, assumes she's too scared to do something or is showing her weakness. She has stated plainly that she has no vulnerabilities.

Always Keep In Mind: Hel can appear cold, aloof, and disinterested however underneath her blasé shell, she actually cares a lot for those in need and around her. She'll often find or make up excuses for the things she does but it is purely a mask. As Queen of Helheim (the underworld), she doesn't want to appear weak or easily manipulated. In her position it could lead to all sorts of problems and ridiculous requests.

Questions: Write an IC answer to the following questions:

What do you want to study at Diatu Magicademy?
….......................
You really have no idea who you're talking to, do you? While training is one thing, I see no reason to abandon my powers to start from scratch.

If you knew you could go back to the moment you left, would you leave immediately or continue your studies for a while?
I would return without a doubt. I can't keep wasting time here when Ragnarok is swiftly approaching.

If your enemy was at Diatu Magicademy, how would you react?
If they were here, I sincerely doubt they would be proclaiming themselves as such. Not without the Jotun to cower behind. On the off chance that the enemy is here, and would be so stupid then I would see that they atoned for their sins here where they pose no threat to my world.

When is it acceptable to resolve a dispute by force?
I hold no great love for violence, but I think I covered this in the previous question. It's appropriate to use force when your opponent is trying to bring about the end of all creation.

What should the supreme goal of any wizard be?
That depends on the wizard, but you can't be much of a wizard without gaining a mastery of the arts.

Powers: Hel has quite a few to choose from but I don't think it would be wise to give them back. Most are fairly destructive, including a literal killing curse.
